CD Reviews

Gilberto Gil (1969, Universal)
LWNORWAY | MI | 10/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This happens to be Gilberto Gil's greatest album. This is his 2nd self-titled album and his overall 3rd album. When Gilberto Gil's Philips Discography was reissued in 2006, this one quickly went right back out of print again, along with his "Expresso 2222" album. However, it may not be as popular as his 1968 album, nor his "Expresso 2222" album.

This album has more of a psychadelic-rock-folk-tropical sound to it and there's a lot of weird noises, voices, sounds and deep lyrics and a commentary included in this project. This album was recorded and released during the first year when he and Caetano Veloso were in exile in the U.K. Just like Caetano Veloso's 1969 album, there are no photos of Gilberto Gil on the front artwork due to the fact that the two artists had their heads shaved and spent some time in prison for becoming very popular and revolutionary to the point to where the government in Brazil thought they were highly dangerous at the time.

This album kinda puts you in a state as to where you're listening to another "Electric Ladyland". Although I wouldn't consider this album "The Electric Ladyland of Brazil", it wouldn't be wrong to do a comparison or to feel like you're listening to another album like that.

If you have to choose one Gilberto Gil album to own, purchase this one, while you still can. The 2000 (Japan) & 2006 (Brazil) reissues contain 5 bonus tracks. This is an album (like "Electric Ladyland") that you can listen to all the way through without skipping any tracks. This entire CD is just that damn good! There's only one track where you can take it or leave it, and that is track #6 ("Vitrines"). Again, this is Gilberto Gil's greatest album and is much better than the overrated 1972 "Expresso 2222" album, much better than 1967 "Louvacao" and even better than his most known 1971 self-titled album!"
