CD Reviews

Magnificent and inspiring
G. Cingal (cingal@clipper.ens.fr) | Paris, France | 02/08/1999

"Voices, violins and lyrics...!Everything is perfect in Manset's house, or rather in his consummate music. As a friend of mine says, even the technical imperfections are part of the music's lyrical impact on the listener. This is magic. Witchcraft. And you're always wishing you had the opportunity to listen to the music for days on end. Wishcraft and witchful music.Pardon me for getting overenthusiastic, but let me tell you that you can't be OVERenthusiastic when Manset is concerned. His music links tragedy and enthusiasm. Listen to it.In his 1970 oratorio LA MORT D'ORION, sci-fi and beatlesey pop are present, but there is so much more to it than that. The verse is deeply felt and marvelously sung. Manset was not the only one to sing on this record; he was assisted by Anne Vanderlove and Gianni Esposito. Nowadays, Vanderlove is in prison after taking part in several holdups, and Esposito is dead. But Manset is alive and well. And his music is eternal!"

"

No way around this artsy ambition sounding dreadfully pretentious, with few triumphant moments in between all the outlandishly French posturing."

"In the dark age of De Gaulle's France an UFO landed and changed the face of french pop for ever. Dark, gothic, full of weird string choruses and electronic sounds, arrogant and brilliant, Orion is simply a masterpiece. Inspired by classical music, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and Leo Ferre, Manset has released since Orion 14 albums that are all exceptional. Nothing compares to Orion. See by yourself."
