CD Reviews

Vintage Shearing, but not recorded in 1993
D. W. Horne | 5263 BS Vught, The Netherlands | 10/03/2000

"As a professional pianist, I have always enjoyed listening to George Shearing, but this recording is not from 1993 as the cover might lead you to believe. These recordings are a bit syrupy - lots of strings. There are much better recordings of Shearing to buy. If I had to do over again, I would not have bought this particular CD .... the dentist will see you next."

"Shearing is a smooth pianist with a jazzy edge, who gets some fine backing groups (often complete with vibraphones and "Pet Sounds" kind of orchestras) and turns in highly enjoyable versions of some classic songs. Good for careful listening as well as for Sunday morning background fare."
Perfect Intro To Shearing

"Of course I'm biased! I've always been in love with the most unique and pleasing sound (piano, vibes and guitar in unison) since the clarinet lead over the reeds of the Glenn Miller sound. The key words here are "pleasing to the ear". True, a lot of George's recordings are called "commercial" but, hey, who says a true artist of the piano hasn't a right to make a living. The only compaint I have, is that with 30 Capitol albums to choose from, how did the 60's "Goin' Out Of My Head" make it to the top 10?Other than that , this is an enjoyable collection of one of the jazz icons of our lives and well worthy of belonging in anyone's collection."
