CD Reviews

Not for DVD-A players

"This review pertains to the DVD-A, not the music. Despite being a "DVD", you can't play this on a DVD-A or DTS 5.1 player in a car. I have an 2008 Acura with this system, and the DVD disk could not be played. I was very disappointed, and felt a bit ripped off. The DVD portion is for the video that comes on the same disk. That sort of made-up for it. You get an audio disk as well and the remix is better than the orginal CD release that I have from 1990. So if you have a DVD audio player in your car, don't bother with this release."
I didn't know how good post gabriel stuff was!

"talk to nearly anyone that's into early genesis and they'll tell you the The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is the last good thing that they put out. however, they would be quite incorrect. yes, this album lacks the dynamic shifts between soft and hard that other genesis albums have, but this one contains some truly excellent songwriting. dance on a volcano is easily my favorite genesis song, and that's saying a LOT! phil collins drumming is probably at it's peak here."
Stay away from the 2007 remastered edition!

"First off, this review deals solely with the 2007 re-master edition. My one star rating is based on the sound quality of the stereo layer of this CD. The 5.1 surround version is interesting but nothing to write home about either. The music is a solid 5-star.

----------------

This has to be one of the most disappointing CD reissues I've heard in the past 10 years-- truly a shame for such a classic recording. Do you want an example of the "loudness wars" in action? This version of Trick of the Tail is compressed to the max in a vain effort to "modernize" its '70's era sound. The overall volume is at least 6 db louder than the 1994 re-master. This makes the disc "louder" at the expense of dynamic range loss. Cymbals lose their shimmer and start to sound like crackling "bacon in the pan". Phil Collin's doubled vocal tracks seem to be non-existent. The bass is a rumbling mess. The drums don't have that snappy "thwack" anymore. I won't even go into the guitar tracks. This was one of Steve Hackett's signature Genesis albums IMO. Half of his parts are buried in the brick walled sound of this disc.

In short, your ears will be too fatigued by this sonic mess. I doubt you'll be able to hear the whole thing in one sitting.

Though it also has it's flaws, I would recommend going with the 1994 re-mastered edition of this CD if you can find it. Even the late 80's original Atco version is miles ahead in tonal quality."
