Synopsis

Amazon.com
Following a year of public scrutiny and marital upheaval, Outside finds Gary Chapman reflecting on shortcomings, yearning for solidity, and reaching out in faith for spiritual healing. The most personal record of his career, this collection features the originals "Learning to Love," a brave statement of loss, forgiveness, and brotherly communion, and "Nothing Without You," an anthem rededicating himself to God's higher purpose. Chapman's lovely voice rings out particularly strong on the lengthy ballad "I Love You, I Do, You Bet," as well as the heartbreaking "Daddy Cut My Hair." But it is "Hold On," dedicated to his three young children, that most eloquently communicates the all-important love of both one's earthly and Heavenly Father. --Paige La Grone

CD Reviews

True to the soul!

"This is a real reflection, I feel, on Gary's life this past year. This is a realistic and honest reflestion of himself. Even though I'm a person who likes more variety in albums, I feel that it is not an issue here. His goal was not to put out more croud-pleasers, instead, it was to creat a true and real account of life put into music. What a wonderful reflection of God's love!"

"I have to say I am a dedicated fan of Gary's. My favorite album is still "The Light Inside." I don't know if his last 2 albums show a mellowing with age, but they aren't quite as "edgy." I was disappointed to see that Gary only wrote 2 of the songs on this album. He is one of the most gifted songwriters I have ever come across. "Learning to Love" is truly beautiful although the music doesn't live up to the power of the lyrics. I am enjoying the cd the more I listen to it, but I cannot help but wish for more. This album seems to be directed at his Prime Time Country fans which I believe to be an older crowd. I am sorry for this show's demise but hope that Gary will get back to what he truly does best-music. This is definitely worth having but the satisfaction did not live up to my anticipation as with "The Light Inside." Has anyone else noticed that cd's do not seem to capture Gary's voice? In person, it is so "wide". The only thing I have that has captured this is a tape from about 10 years ago of a live performance called "A Moment In Time." You can truly appreciate the broadness of his voice on that tape. No cd I have heard has done this!"

"This is truly a fine album! I have Gary Chapman's other albums also and I enjoy them all, but this one is especially poignant in his reflection on life, love, death and faith. Gary's voice is so clear and resonant that it brings a sincere and personal note to all the songs even though he wrote only one song and co-wrote another. The song Daddy Cut My Hair is such a touching tribute to the father-son relationship. Two other songs that speak to the heart are I Love You, I Do, You Bet and As Good As Good-by Gets. These songs are beautiful. Nothing Without You is a great opener for the CD and Hold On is yet another beautiful song that he dedicates to his 3 children. This collection is one of his best and not to be missed by anyone who likes his work."
