Awesome!! Ohlsson plays like he is an orchestra!

"Beginning with the Corelli Variations, Ohlsson plays the beautiful opening melody with simplicity and sadness. Some of the variations are based on the main melody, other on the harmonic progressions. Whatever the pianistic technical issues are, Ohlsson handles them with his usual technical mastery - blistering Rachmaninoff cadenza-like runs, cascading chordal runs. Then that gogeous melody returns with even more melancholy.

The Prolofiev Sonata #2 is awesome!! The musical colors he acheives are amazing -the left hand playing perecussive disonant chords, the right hand is playing almost impressionistic! Then bright sparkling ascending runs, at lightening speed! He even acheives beautiful voicing within chords of either hand - some notes slightly louder/softer than others. The sounds are never static! Always evolving.

As for the Pictures - this is a live performance in Poland, when Ohlsson was only 24 yrs. old! His command of the instrument is already there - the clarity of his finger work, dynamic range - its all there. He begins the Promenade a little faster than I am used to - I like it a little more stately - but thats an interpretive issue. From there on the performance is totally commited to the extreme demands of this fabulous work. Buy it - listen, really Listen to it!"
