THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF.........
Melvyn M. Sobel | Freeport (Long Island), New York | 01/02/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As with his interpretations of the Ballades and Scherzi (Vol.'s 3 and 4, respectively, in Arabesque's complete Chopin enterprise), Garrick Ohlsson has chosen a creative path daringly original. Taking some minor aesthetic delineation from his mentor, the inimitable pianist, Claudio Arrau (whose own set of Nocturnes I have always found remarkably penetrating), Ohlsson delves even further inside these already mysterious, elusive works. His are readings of exceptional, uncompromising individuality, filled with esoteric melodic and harmonic detail, fabulous voicing, thought-provoking rubati, and, frequently, rapturous lengths hypnotically sustained. However "wayward" (in the most adventurous sense of the word), these are endlessly fascinating, utterly engrossing performances.Shorn by Ohlsson of their perennial sentimentality, the Nocturnes are revealed, instead, as pieces of iridescent melancholy, profound emotional depth and unrelenting beauty; yet, as well, so acute is Mr. Ohlsson's sensitivity to these works, that Chopin's "dark side" is very much brought disturbingly to the fore: his quite tangible sense, everywhere permeating, of an almost sinister foreboding, a sense of eventual tragedy. In the playing of these Nocturnes, Ohlsson again draws heavily upon his own personal "vision" of Chopin's creative genius to pull us in and transfix us by these works like never before. For me, it was a most striking and intense experience; possibly, these are the most unique renditions of the Nocturnes I have ever encountered. The sound is gorgeous, haunting, full of mystery, sadness and precognition, as is Ohlsson's playing. All told, a musical revelation not to be missed by any means![Running time--- CD 1: 72:49 CD 2: 57:33]"
