CD Reviews

Cheap repackage of "The Very Best of Funkadelic 1976-1981"
M. McM | Los Angeles, CA | 03/22/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is actually a cheap, repackaging of the Charly compilation, "The Very Best of Funkadelic." [Label: Charly UK, Release date: July 1, 1999, Catalog Number: 83062, ASIN: B00000BICB]

Same mastering, same track sequence...unfortunately the new packaging is really cheap. The artwork is a cheap Photoshop job, and it's also bizarre: they use one, small, poorly scanned photograph that's from a different era. There's also NO liner notes, and virtually no information, all that's printed is the track names.

The music's great, a good sampling of Funkadelic's Warner Bros. era (1976-1981), but in all honesty, "The Whole Funk & Nothing But the Funk: Definitive Funkadelic 1976-1981" is a MUCH better choice.

I should note that all four Warner Bros. albums have been remastered with bonus tracks, so you may want to buy those four albums instead of picking up a compilation. "One Nation Under A Groove" is arguably Funkadelic's best, "Uncle Jam" is great for the first 25 minutes, "The Electric Spanking of War Babies" has its fans, and "Hardcore Jollies" is a good transitional album. All four are worth hearing, but if you want a compilation, go with "The Whole Funk & Nothing But the Funk: Definitive Funkadelic 1976-1981.""
