CD Reviews

Another Haunting Eaglesmith CD
Dan Bogaty | 06/02/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"THINGS IS CHANGIN' is a Fred Eaglesmith CD first issued around 1993. I love Fred and think that this is one of the best of his CDs. Eaglesmith fans know that he writes in various styles many of which overlap: country, folk, rock n roll, bluegrass. This is basically a folk CD featuring his songs about everyday people whose lives are often marginal and often spiraling downhill. The lyrics are as always gorgeous and honest to the bone.

One of Fred's main interests - the hard life lived by people who farm or work on farms and the ultimate failure of those farms - is well represented on THINGS IS CHANGIN' by "Sharecroppin'", "Joe", "Carmelita", and "Harold Wilson" which is my favorite song on a CD full of great songs.

Eaglesmith is in great voice on this CD as are the others, particularly the AMAZING close high harmonies of the incomparable Willie P. Bennett.

The only possible negative for some listeners might be that there is a sameness to the songs, slow and minor keyed and world-weary, that may fail to hold their interest through the whole CD.

Personally though this is not a problem for me, and will not be for Fredheads or for those who are Fredheads and just don't know it yet.

A BEAUTIFUL CD.

Classic FRED EAGLESMITH

"A classic introduction for the uninitiated, those who have not yet squeezed into some overcrowded club to sit in stunned silence and gaze in wonder at Fred Eaglesmith, experiencing this gentle, rough, tender, modest and egomaniacal wizard. Follow this cd with his masterpiece, "Drive-in Movie," and you will be searching for a used Airstream trailer and following Fred across the country."
