CD Reviews

Maybe the best Schone Mullerin on record
jonsj | New York, NY United States | 11/14/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This recording, little-known and now almost 10 years old, is potentially the best version of Die Schone Mullerin on record. It was greeted by a very positive review by Alan Blyth in The Gramophone when it first came out, but for some reason was not available in the US until recently.

Rainer Trost may be best know for his elegantly sung Ferrando in John Eliot Gardiner's Cosi fan Tutte (audio and DVD versions). Here he is in superb voice - with exceptionally attractive tone and a seamless legato line - as he gives one of the most impassioned and beautifully sung versions of this great song cycle. This is often a bold, dramatic, and vivid performance -- it has none of the fussiness or preciousness that passes for much lieder singing these days -- yet it also has moments of exquisite sensitivity and vocalism. This is one of the best performances in capturing the youthful longing - and the sense of desperation - in this great music. Highest recommendation - grab it before it disappears!"
