CD ReviewsVery high quality quintet pieces Swing King | Cincinnati, OH USA | 01/04/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "This recording is phenomenal, the total playing time coming in at a generous 78:15. Recorded in 1996 live at the Guinness Spot in Belfast, this fine quintet features first class technicians:
Frank Tate (bass) Harry Allen (tenor sax) Howard Alden (guitar) Dave McKenna (piano) Butch Miles (drums) This is very high quality jazz. It really gives me hope for the state of jazz music in the modern day. Each one of these musicians demonstrates a command for melody and improvisation, and I find myself revisiting this album frequently. It gets played more often than many of my more classic albums. This German label, Nagel Heyer Records, has been putting out some really nice jazz for over a decade now. In my opinion they seem to be like Blue Note for the current era. Too many record companies produce smooth jazz until one is sick, but Nagel Heyer is keeping it very real. They obviously know what to look for when signing artists. I will buy anything from this label, and anything Frank Tate and crew may put out in the future. This album belongs on the shelf of every jazz enthusiast. " |
