CD Reviews

Two classics!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Frankie Laine's two discs with Michel Legrand are the best LPs he ever cut, along with the classic "Jazz Spectacular" release. The arrangements are surprising and clever, bursting with energy and excitement. The song choices are all superb, ranging from well-known standards ("September in the Rain" and an unforgettable "Lover Come Back to Me") to such little-known gems as "I Forget the Time" and "You're Just the Kind." Best of all is Laine himself, sounding confident and joyous throughout. His version of "Too Marvelous For Words" is simply delightful, and Laine handles the clever wordplay with style and charm. There's not a bad moment anywhere on this two-disc set. And not one Western-themed song in sight, for those who don't care for that aspect of Frankie's career. This release is long overdue."
Laine + Legrand = Pop Heaven

"If you want to hear Laine at his best, with possibly his best orchestral backing, "Reunion In Rhythm" is the one to get - Legrand's arrangements are light as a croissant, but swing with verve, pushing Laine to new heights as an interpreter of standards. "Foreign Affair" is a bit more straight-pop, but again, very tasteful, with Laine's voice in its prime. After this one, check out "Return of Mr. Rhythm," also on Collectables."
