CD Reviews

Brilliant musicians and heartfelt lyrics
04/01/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"BUY THIS CD! Be the first person you know to discover this great relatively unknown group. This CD showcases each band member's talents in great ways. Honestly--to really appreciate this band you have to see them live, but Baila Toca lets you hear what the band bases their incredible gigs on. Songs such as "Lovely Lady" and "Tonight" scream to want to be played on radio (and should be--"Lovely Lady" is one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard), while other Monk tunes, "Getting Higher" and "Running Out of Time," give a little glimpse into what might be next for Fondue Monks.Bassist Rozzano Zamorano is one you'll definitely hear about in the future, whether it be with the Monks or solo. His devotion to funk, blues, and jazz fusion mix in ways that few bands can master. He has to be seen to be believed -- but you'll be able to tell from listening to just the first few seconds of Baila Toca that Rozz is a master musician. Guitarist Steve Olson is excellent and lays down melodies that work well with drummer Ronnie Zamorano (he often plays the skins live without sticks!) and frontman Denver Courtney, who is definitely an entertainer. Most of the lyrics were penned by Courtney, and those who like their songs about love & loss will definitely not be disappointed with these songs. This Houston, Texas 4-piece is a great band who undoubtedly have great things in store for them. This CD is just a part of what they have to offer fans.Their self-titled CD is from 1994 (also available on Amazon), and has excellent songs as well. The highlight is "Awake." Check their site for more recent info."
