CD Reviews

Cd and dvd of music from northeastern algeria available nowh

(5 out of 5 stars)

"for a brief time algeria had peace but now (2008) the violence has begun again. it would take a brave (foolhardy?) soul to visit the country now to record the treasures such as those found on this cd. whereas modern pop and rai music from algeria is plentiful, certain types of traditional music are almost impossible to find. this may change perhaps if some enterprising person within the country takes advantage of the wonderful possibilities of amazon's mp3 download business.

what the present cd/dvd set offers is 12 tracks, 4 of which are excerpted on the dvd and one presented in its entirety. 3 selections on the dvd are not present on the cd. the cd is 73 minutes and the dvd is 32 minutes.

the qasba played here is not the moroccan qasba (a 30 cm. 7-hole instrument), but more like a chebbaba in length but with 11-14 holes. the groups consist of 3-4 gasba players and several drummers playing the bendir.

the music is both secular and sacred (trance). the only complaint possible is that the dvd wasn't filmed during a zerda and so is missing the ambience and excitement of such a setting. if everyone buys this cd perhaps more will follow. easy to rate it .....5 stars at least.....
