Synopsis

Product Description
I Think Johnny Cash would be especially proud of this tribute album. Not just because of his high regard for Floyd Red Crow Westerman or his own life-long identification with Native Americans and commitment to their cause, but because it is such a respectful, loving portrayal of the man s work. Floyd s deep, powerful voice resonates with the truth. I had no idea he could sound so much like John. - Kris Kristofferson This CD features Johnny Cash songs performed by world renown Native American actor, singer, songwriter and advocate Floyd Red Crow Westerman, who is best remembered for his role as elder/leader Ten Bear in Dances With Wolves . His work and dedication have helped spread the American Indian Movement s message throughout the world. He has performed with countless musicians including Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Jackson Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, John Trudell and Don Henley in large benefit concerts for Indian self-determination, human rights and environmental protection. He toured the world with Sting to publicize the plight of the Rainforest and has been an ambassador of good will representing the International Indian Treaty Council. Floyd writes: Johnny Cash was very proud of his Cherokee heritage, and was a great supporter of American Indian issues. I had the great honor to meet and be on the same bill with Johnny Cash. It was a night to remember.

Personal Tribute
Phil S. | USA | 02/03/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When the artist was 70, this CD was released, an all-acoustic effort, save one track which features a trumpet - guess which one folks?

Westerman added Cash to his Country music A & R back in the '50s and it appears that he finally made it to the studios to record "A Tribute To Johnny Cash".

Cash was not only a musical influence but also a partner in asserting the cause of justice for the Native American. Other collaborative artists include Kris Kristofferson (who has a nice liner inscription here, beside "Sunday Morning Comin' Down").

Of course, Westerman is known for movie appearances in such major films as "Dances With Wolves", and big TV shows like "Texas Ranger" with Chuck Norris.

Nice to have "Guess Things Happen That Way", "San Quentin", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "I Still Miss Someone", and a 1963 JC item, "Drums", which this fan is not familiar with.

"Give My Love To Rose" is most likely a tribute to Rosie Westerman, so the chance to celebrate two important lives is an added highlight.

As one might expect, we have "I Walk The Line", and by 2006, I could live without another "cover". Cash's '56 classic, to me, has never been equalled, even by the man himself. With all the attempts, it appears just three made the singles charts, so that should tell 'em something.

Floyd surely has a great sound, though some over-critics may say, not a great *voice*. If they mean not formally trained to go for long notes in the next octave, for example, well, that's fair. But his deep reverberation, with just a hint of sadness, will make the same listener immediately identify his voice with the voice of Johnny Cash."
Grandfather Westerman

"This disk was gifted to me. The first time I played it, my husband came into my office to listen. The next time I reached for it, it was gone. Found him in the family room chair with his headsets, listening to it for his third time though.

Grandfather Westerman sings Johnny Cash as well as Johnny Cash but in his own way and with a different spirit. Johnny would be very proud."
The great man himself
