CD Reviews

Decent, but 20 other bands are doing the same thing

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Flashpoint are a young, talented and energetic band with a very good stage performance; as I had the chance to see them with a barrage of other bands at last year's OzzFest. The only problem with "On the Verge," the band's debut, is it sounds too much like the recent wave of other new metal bands who play the exact same hard-to-classify style that seems to have mainly been spawned by the likes of Deftones and Slipknot. Using the familiar hooky riffs, aggressive vocals and occasional programming techniques that the aforementioned wave of bands use - some examples include Disturbed, Apartment 26, Ultraspank, and the Deadlights - Flashpoint create a cyber-metal assault that sounds a lot like the above bands. And this is where the problem arises. Though not all these bands use programming and/or a DJ, their sound is undeniably similar, and Flashpoint falls right in the middle of the pack. Their music is somewhat catchy and fun to listen to, but rarely does it go beyond that. However, what made me inclined to give the CD a shot was their live show at OzzFest - for a new, virtually unknown band at the time, they put on a very engaging performance that gained my interest and subsequent hopes for how the album would turn out - but sadly, now that a laundry list of other "new metal" bands (some of which I already mentioned) are doing the exact same thing as Flashpoint, I feel a bit guilty for slandering them slighty, because all these bands are definitely hardworking and have made it farther than some would expect. Even still, I'm not saying Flashpoint is a bad band - I really can't degrade any band because I have tremendous respect for any group who can come out of nowhere and see their hard work pay off. But at the same time, I must express my true opinion of their music, and this is where I contradict myself.Fans of Apartment 26 and Static-X will probably eat this one up, but you shouldn't expect anything ground-breaking. Songs like "O2" and "Faith" (not a George Michael cover! ) induce a foot-tapping at first listen, but the depth reaches only that far. Hopefully these guys will realize their potential and release a great follow-up to their average debut."
