Synopsis

Album Description
Following up their debut, "Midnattens Widunder", the Finnish Finntroll unleash yet another fun folk/polka/black metal release. As with their debut, this isn't just another black/folk act that take themselves way too seriously. Just the opposite...these guys are just having a good time and playing a few different styles of music they enjoy. in doing so, they have actually separated themselves from the endless sea of black metal and black/folk acts, creating something that is actually worth listening to. A rare feat for modern black metal hybrid bands.

CD Reviews

Amazingly not poop

"Finntroll is musically and thematically brilliant, a sort of soundtrack for a dark forest. If you don't like polka with your metal, don't buy it. If you like amazing, pure folk-metal, dark soundscapes and great musicianship, order it immediately. Don't listen to the review below (or above, I have no idea). Anyway, a brilliant mix of traditional finnish folk and metal."

"This is a surprisingly fun album. Can't understand a word they are singing but then again, I never listen to the lyrics anyway. Let's just say their "articulated vocal noises" are right on the mark. They are such a unique blend of death metal and Finnish humpaa (?) music and it somehow works. And, it works very well. I picture lots of partying trolls, dwarves, whatever all having a good time singing, drinking, grunting and mumbling up a storm. It also reminds me of a bunch of non-English speaking pirates on a drinking binge, hence the title of this review. Quite well done and highly recommended."
Absolutely Insane.

"I'm sure you know by now, Finntroll adds massive Pokla elements to Black Metal. The thing is, IT WORKS. Extremely well.

I've had this album for about two years and for some reason in the last couple months it has grown on me a lot and became quite addicting. The songs are quite catchy and well... danceable, containing very upbeat rhythms and accordions quite often and sometimes calmer Viking-style brass instruments and keyboards. This is all in addition to crushingly heavy guitars and aggressive growling vocals (in... Swedish). If the melodies aren't polka, then they're more of a Viking-metal or folk-metal sort of feeling.

It is not quite as silly as most people think, although there are a few parts that are silly such as the second part of the last track, "Tomhet Och Tystnad Härska" which is some kind of Finnish drinking song played in a folk style with banjos, hefty trumpets and drunken slurring. Also the "backing vocals" in the title track are some form of totally wacky/drunken chanting, and there's a few bits and pieces of crazy vocals like that scattered around.

"Krig" is a short intro to gradually unleash the chaos, containing pounding drums and deep brass instruments over ambient keyboards. It continues right into the next song "Fodosagan" which begins with a deep piano melody and seems like a relatively normal black metal song until it breaks down and emphasizes the wild accordion melody, then goes into a slightly calmer section with acoustic guitars.

"Slaget Vid Blodsalv" is quite possibly the best song, it immediately starts with a hyper-paced accordion melody right along with heavy guitars; the clash of these two genres is just so ridiculously wild. The drumming in this song is excellent. "Bakom Varje Fura" is a short symphonic arrangement and a break between the chaos, it almost sounds like music from a kid's animated movie or something, but it is honestly really good.

So far I have this album and Nattfodd, and it is really hard to determine which one I like better. So if you like one you'll definitely like the other. And If you haven't heard Finntroll at all yet, you'll love it if you're craving some metal that adds fun and craziness to the chaos."
