CD Reviews

The Filaments are More than Moderately Bitchen
Kat | the band room | 12/28/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This band is ... awesome. You can't escape its obvious awesomeness even if you run and hide! With songs like "Bastard Coppers" and "Better Way" its not even funny how good this band is. Generally it's in the sub-genre of ska-punk, but its also plain punk at times, never the mindless brainwashing pop-emo that has turned so much of the youth today into blood-sucking mtv minions--it is in fact, honest to skank ska-punk/punk rock. The interesting thing about The Filaments, however, is that they bring a certain element to their music that other ska-punk bands seldom achieve: complete and utter giddy perky happiness through obsenity soaked anger. In no other instance could you find me happily smiling and singing along to a song like "Bastard Coppers" in my car, as one of my best friends danced a choreographed dance that she did for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to it... The Filaments are one of a kind in that sense.
Another great thing about the Filaments is the skull and trombones. A beautiful, WONDERFUL, MARVELOUS combination that resides on the back of one of my sweatshirts in fact. Too bad you can't see the album cover here, or you would know what I'm talking about. The less obvious coolness is also emphasised with the fact that the only female in the entire band is the trombone player. Yay! I'm a female trombone player!
So, ok, enough with my babbling... I just want to say that this is the best CD, band, whatever, EVER even thought of, and it gets 5 stars, a rarity for my ratings. But don't take my word for it, go on over to http://www.thefilaments.com and download a few of their mp3s, namely "Bastard Coppers" and figure out why I LOVE The Filaments."
