As they commemorate nearly two decades together with their 10th album, following up a record that broadened their boundaries as a power-pop band (2004's Palais), the Figgs get back to the fundamentals: guitar, bass, drums--and more guitar. Punching out 10 songs of power-chord pleasure, the three-piece from New York state plunders '70s proto-punks like the Buzzcocks and the Only Ones, authenticating their veteran status while holding on to a youthful enthusiasm. Most songs clock in at the three- to four-minute range, ideal for the whirling minds of bassist/vocalist Pete Donnelly and guitarist/vocalist Mike Gent, who evenly divide the bulk of Follow Jean's songwriting. Paving the way are Gent's "Regional Hits," with its riffs polished from Nuggets, the rapid-fire "Don't Hurt Me Again," and a title song that blooms on infectious harmonies and drummer Pete Hayes's exultant beat--precisely the m.o. of a band aiming to do what it does best. --Scott Holter

CD Reviews

Viva The Figgs!!
Lil' Creeper | Los Angeles, CA United States | 12/03/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have been a fan of The Figgs since 1994, when I first heard the band at a WEQX-sponsored concert in my then-hometown of Albany. Although the band never had much success on the major labels, they have perservered and continued to make killer albums, many times with budgets that are probably a fragment of what they had to work with when the band was on Capital and Imago Records.

"Regional Hits" is just that - a should-have-been regional hit, if only radio didn't suck so much today. "Hobble Skirt (In Erie)" is my personal favorite. Now that I live in LA, how can I not resist the chorus "no more dealing with traffic and crowds" ??

Nearly twenty years into their careers, The Figgs truly are one of the best power pop/power chord bands in the world. This album may not be the best introduction to the band (be sure to pick up "Low Fi at Society High" and "Sucking In Stereo), but longtime fans will no doubt rejoice over this new album."
A letdown after Palais, but....

"you have to consider that album had 25 songs, most of which were great, while this one has 10 and is comparatively stingy.

Follow Jean Through The Sea is still great to have. Overall, the Pete Donnelly songs come off better than the Gent songs this time around, although my favorite is the title track, a rare co-write by the two.

It's just good to still have this band around. Great songs, simple performances. No gimmicks.

Here's to another 20 years."
