A scorching debut from this band who call the Piedmont region of Italy home. It starts off like a techno album, and it's quite a kick when the Scottish war pipes burst into the title track, an homage to modern women. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Like a paisano version of Afro Celt Sound System, Fiamma Fumana deftly balance Italian folk, dance beats, and a Celtic influence that never becomes overwhelming. Singer Fiamma possesses a deeply seductive voice, which works liltingly with a slow piece like "Hypnananna," but is equally at home on the more upbeat material. Most of the songs are originals, but even the traditional "Four Piedmontese"--the Italian equivalent of an American outlaw ballad--sounds modern, with button accordion and guitar. And dance fans will have a field day with the Fumana Folk Sound System remix of "1.0" where the machines take over and transform the cut into dancefloor heaven. Assured and accomplished, Fiamma Fumana cross genres and geography in a single bound. --Chris Nickson

CD Reviews

Unique, enthralling
LGwriter | Astoria, N.Y. United States | 11/08/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"As worldbeat continues to spread and diversify, it's really refreshing to come across something not only new and original, but captivating as well. As far as I know, this is the first group to take traditional Italian folk songs and fuse them with dance electronics. Rather than being just another entry in the often tired worldbeat arena, this album sings, pops, bounces, and sparkles. The female vocalist, Fiamma, is excellent, and the musicians with her are equally as talented. As is true with the most sophisticated and skilled worldbeat practitioners, the group does not limit themselves to their native melodies and instruments. Inspiration is drawn from sources as diverse as Finland and the Celtic world. Aside from programming and keyboards, instruments include accordion, tin whistle, bouzouki, and uillean pipes. This is a top-notch release!"
Bagpipe Rock

"I really enjoyed this CD, but I'm an eclectic kind of guy. I don't mind that it's in Italian or that there's a bagpipe on nearly every track, but I can understand how not everyone here might get into it.

The vocals are top-notch: soaring and clear. Great singer and if you're into world beat and electronica, this one's for you."
