CD Reviews

A Budget Re-Release of Fesca's Symphonies 2 & 3
J Scott Morrison | Middlebury VT, USA | 02/21/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This new cpo release is actually a budget re-release of a full-price 2003 issue of Frank Beermann and the NDR Radiophilharmonie playing Friedrich Ernst Fesca's Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 and his 'Cantemire' Overture. Please refer to reviews at the full-price site: Friedrich Ernst Fesca: Symphonies 2 & 3; Cantemire Overture. This new release also includes the fat and tempting cpo catalog for 2008. My own feeling is that cpo is doing amazing things in releasing performances of relatively obscure but worthwhile classical and romantic musical works. We are in the debt for that. Their catalog is a visual feast and could make your wallet a good deal thinner.

The works included here are reminiscent of early-to-mid-period Beethoven and are expertly done. These performances are all one could ask for.

"I heard my first Fesca symphony in the middle of the night (insomnia) while reading and listening to NPR. I assumed it was something by Mozart and took note when the composer was announced at the end of the piece. The next day I went on-line and ordered the best edition available. If you have even a tolerance for Mozart, this disc is for you."
