CD Reviews

Superb performance, great music
Todd R. Peckarsky | Reston, VA United States | 09/06/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A desert island disk! This recording of the two Faure cello sonatas (and Elegy) and Debussy cello sonata is extraordinary. I am very fond of the music of Faure, but this disk, more than any other I have heard, convinces me of Faure's greatness as a composer. These two sonatas are played with such conviction and passion by Messieurs Tortelier and Hubeau they make you believe in this music as they obviously do.Mr. Tortelier's playing is beautiful. His cello seems to sing like a human voice. Jean Hubeau fully partners in the music making. The interplay of their instruments is flawless and fully thought out. They are so fully into this music. This is great chamber music playing of great chamber works. The recorded sound is quite good, considering its 1962 date."
