Synopsis

This is a poor listening program, but an excellent CD. The Barcarolles of Fauréare as subtle and delicate as fine porcelain, and as beautiful. They were all published separately and obviously were unintended to be heard at once, nor would any recitalist play them that way in public. (Few pianists play them at all, which is a real pity.) Pierre-Alain Volondat has deep insight into this music, playing with the kind of relaxed lyricism that makes the music bloom. And it's certainly convenient having all these pieces together where you can find them. Just don't play the CD straight through. The solo version of the Ballade (later orchestrated) is beautifully played also. -- Leslie Gerber

Beautiful

"The Amazon reviewer is simnply wrong; this is a beautiful listening program. The reviewer is wrong again about these pieces never being played complete in concert; in fact I myself have had the pleasure of hearing three different complete performances live. The performances on this disc are perfectly fine, even if they lack the elegance of a Heidsieck or the romantic sweep of a Rubenstein. This disc is well worth investigating, especially at this price."
Agree with Amazon reviewer - GREAT CD, not good listening pr

"I must agree with the Amazon reviewer that although this is a wonderful CD, beautifully played by Mr. Volondat, it is not a good overall listening program. I found listening to the entire CD at one go a bit taxing on the senses. Since these barcarolles are so condensed and full of thematic material and rhythm, they need to be listened to individually and be given their due space in order to appreciate them fully."
