CD Reviews

'Old school' Salsa from the best
03/25/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD takes listeners back to a time when salsa had less of a commercial appeal and a more gritty syncopated, brass and bass heavy groove.Ruben B., Panama's musical ambassador, shines in his rendition of Sin Tu Carino.Salsa officionados will also recongnize heavyweights Willie Colon, Celia Cruz, and Papo Lucca. The music played on this rec ording is varied as well, with the inclusion of a disco version of Watermelon Man and the pop tinged Ella Fue(She was the one). However, the excitement comes from traditional tracks such as Juan Pachanga, Todos Vuelven, Coro Miyare and Isadora. The horn arrangements and ensemble, compliment the driving percussion sections and background vocals. This is one of my favorite Salsa discs and a good barometer of the musical climate of the time period."
Chevere ! Fantastic soul

"These classics do take you back to an early untampered salsa style. It's brimming with fierce conga rythms and just pure SOUND. It's not today's blander and more commercial style. Colon, and Blades are masters that deserve to be part of everyone's collection."
God bless old salsa

"I love old salsa like this one. I am 19 years old, but I am gald my father introduced me to this music beause it is better than anything they give on the radio. It comes from the heart not the pockets of record companies. Now all the new guys are singing the same stuff; it is time they sit down and listen to the masters of salsa!"
