Great Music
12/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is a fantastic combination of artistry and technique. The compositions are top-notch pieces idealized by some of the most gifted and talented composers of the late 20th century. The University of New Mexico Wind Symphony executes the compositions with great care and attention to detail, as well as a deep understanding and appreciation of the music. If you consider this CD for no other reason than the soloists, your expectations will not only be met, but they will be far exceeded. Joe Alesi is a master of his trombone and can communicate through the rich sounds of his instrument. Phil Smith can make his trumpet sing and the artistry of both men is phenomonal. This CD is definitely worth owning!"
Well Concieved and Amazingly Played

"Two masters of their respective instruments Joseph Alessi, trombone and Philip Smith, trumpet. Very few people match the musical achievement of these two people. The compositions on the album are fist rate. Colloquy, for trombone & wind ensemble by William Goldstein allowed Mr. Alessi to demonstrate his beautiful sound. The band played very well behind him. Derek Bourgeois' Concerto for trombone and Band is an inventive score that more than showed Alessi's technique and expression. My favorite pieces on the album were Evensong by Steven Greyer, commissioned for this album. It is slow piece played exceptionally by Philip Smith. His tone and phrasing dominated the piece, but the band behind him was very receptive and balanced. The last song Fandango, commissioned for this album as well, by Joseph Turrin gives me the image of Philip Smith and Joseph Allessi cruising down Broadway with the top off and playing. It is fun and a great way to close the album. This is a must have for brass for trumpet and trombone players and a great choice for anyone who wants great music to listen to."
