Marvelous!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Bollinger's Fancy Free is indeed an exciting CD and I strongly urge bass trombonists out there to get it! He starts off the cd with the unaccompanied Spain by David Fetter. His flexibility and wonderful rich sound amazes me a lot! Another interesting work is Zwei Fantasie Stucke (2 Fantasy Pieces) written in the Romantic Period... sounds like a Brahms Lied for bass trombone. Tomasi's To Be or Not To Be is an all-time bass trombone delight and Tcherepnin's Andante (written for tuba if I'm not wrong) s a wonderful showcase of Bollinger's musicality. A sweet and simple melody in low range... its simply gorgeous! He ends wth Fancy Free, a typical Pryor kind of showy theme and variation. Bollinger made it harder by extending the range to make it sound real impressive! Yet despite all these, the lack of variety of styles hinder it to be 5 stars, but this CD is GOOD!!!"
