Amazon.com The cartoon series Family Guy is experiencing a network revival these days, and the CD, Family Guy Live in Las Vegas, is undoubtedly just part of the planned marketing blitz. Not exactly a soundtrack, this disc contains mostly new material created specifically for the album, all performed with Vegas lounge panache. Freed from the constraints of television, series producer Seth MacFarlane tells viewers of the bonus DVD that the comedy on this disc will be "edgier." While Family Guy was never known for subtlety, most of the tracks on this disc are as heavy handed and mean-spirited as hitting someone over the head with a baseball bat. "All Cartoons Are F***** D**ks," with a guest appearance by Jason Alexander, is sort of funny, and the TV medley sung by Brian and Stewie is enjoyable (although it's overstayed its welcome by the time they get to the "Who's the Boss" theme). Other tracks like "Puberty?s Gonna Get Me," and "'Q' Man Loves Nobody" are just painful. Perhaps the most entertaining part of this package is Stewie's "Sexy Party" video, which is found on the DVD. This disc holds promise for Family Guy fans and anyone who's driven to hysterical giggles by the word "balls." For others?not so much. --Leah Weathersby Similarly Requested CDs

CD ReviewsThe Spectacular Return of the Griffin Family Edward Aycock | New York, NY United States | 04/27/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "From the "so darn talented it's sickening" mind of Seth MacFarlane comes this hilarious CD. It wasn't really recorded live in Vegas, but the CD cleverly constructs the sound of a Vegas act, complete with audience applause and the echo effect. And the gang is all here, with the voices of MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green and Mila Kunis in place. (MacFarlane has a surprisingly smooth singing style.) I had to get this the day of release. I was not a fan of "Family Guy" at first but it's grown on me so much I like it more than "The Simpsons". Plus, in a refreshing change from the TV censors, Stewie and the rest swear a great deal; (available in a family-friendly and an explicit CD version with a REALLY nasty swipe at Bea Arthur), yes -- Stewie finally curses. Every song is written like a Broadway show-stopper. And there's an almost ten-minute medley where Stewie and Brian sing 80s sitcom themes, complete with bad lead-ins like, "imagine Brian if we were ... Perfect Strangers ..." Even funnier is the fact that anybody even thought to resurrect the "Perfect Strangers" theme. Make this the CD of the week. Special appearances by Haylie Duff, Patti LuPone, Adam West and Jason Alexander. But no sighting of Asian reporter Trisha Takanawa." It's the Las Vegas Lounge Act you wish you could see... Gary Ancheta | 07/12/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "I just purchased the CD and, even though I'm an ocassional fan of Family Guy, I really enjoyed this album alot because it's one of the first cartoon CD that tries to achieve the feeling of a live album. I've had the Simpsons CD and even though it has better music than the Family Guy CD, it doesn't have the same feeling of a live album...a live Vegas album with all the cursing and luridness and candidness that comes from a Las Vegas lounge act.
But besides the whole "Lounge Act", it also has some great music attached to the jokes (which goes beyond just the common fart jokes that the reviewer above seems to think). It reminds me of the best orchestration of a Tom and Jerry or an old Warner Brothers cartoon. It reaches back to the past in a lot of ways and I appreciate both the satire and the homage the CD gives to live lounge acts (like the motif of having random people Jason Alexander come up on stage and sing along with the cast for no apparent reason or the segue dialogue patter of the cast before they spring back into song) in the same way that the South Park Movie spoofs the tone and rhythm of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. If you're a fan of Live Albums or 60s Lounge Acts or even the Family Guy, this album is for you." |
