CD Reviews

A good place to start?

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Fairport Convention regrouped in 1985 without Sandy Denny (who stubbornly remains dead) or Richard Thompson (who stubbornly clings to an awesome solo career). It seems many will never forgive them for that. Oh well, for the rest of us, they have produced some of the finest music of their career. "Gladys' Leap," "Expletive Delighted," "In Reel Time," "Red and Gold," "The Five Seasons," "Jewel in the Crown," "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue," "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," "The Cropredy Box," "The Wood and the Wire," and God knows what else are all marvelous. However, if you are new to all this, "the Woodworm Years might be a convenient place to start. It only covers the years 1985-1991, but it gives a good idea of the breadth and talent displayed by the modern era Fairports. OK, it not "Liege and Leaf." But then, "Liege and Leaf" isn't THIS either."
