CD Reviews

Not your Father's Bootleg Tape, anymore
PHILIP S WOLF | SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA. USA | 08/10/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This was once a cassette tape (remember those?) that was produced by Woodworm Records in the early 80's. It was sold at the gigs or by mail order only and was never offically in the shops as we all thought it to be a bootleg anyway. I got my copy of a traders list in the middle 80's ( a lot of live Fairport shows appeared on tape trading lists back then).

The Friends of Fairport & Talking Elephant Records have now released this rare item on CD.

These tapes are from live shows from 1971 thru 1974 from a bunch of different locations so the quality of sound is of issue here as it sometimes good and sometimes not so good at all.

The songs and performances here have some really great versions: "The Hexamshire Lass", "It'll Take A long Time" & "Hen's March" are as played flawless (and the band was legless most of the time on those 70's stages). A rare "Sloth" from Texas in 1971 features fantastic LEAD GUITAR from Simon Nicol. A live Babbacombe Lee song is included any features the electric piano playing drummer Dave Mattacks. The best thing here is "Furs & Feathers" it's a stunner with Swarb shining on fiddle and wonderful vocals.

Sandy Denny, is featured as well but as she was not a band member at this time she was only brought on stage for the encores and to make the crowd go nuts. It sounds like she was enjoying the bar a little too much on "That'll Be The Day".

With all the Fairport Convention CD's out there, this little curio is not the place to begin a proper collection. But, if you want to here some rare "Middle Period" Fairport you will enjoy this collection warts an' all.

Three Stars."
