CD Reviews

A bit more slippery, but still unmistakably xplsn

(4 out of 5 stars)

"at first, i was disappointed in this ep. it's a bit more melodic and smoother than "flashflashflash" and their self-titled ep (demo). but while it's not as incendiary and doesn't quite have the grit of those two, it's still punchy. the subdued tone of these songs just needed to stew in my head for a good 10 spins in order to stick. overall, this is the explosion you know and love from their 2 previous releases. (however, the record after this, "black tape", is something else).

like the first two releases? you'll like this. if you didn't like em before, this one won't change your mind.

BONUS DISC: this is cool. a label sampler with at least few songs you'll probably like if you follow the explosion. quite a varied roster, which is a welcome change from many small labels which all too often fill their ranks with a dozen half-baked ripoffs of the band that started the label in the first place. the explosion does an excellent job of showing their varied interests here. many of these bands have since put out full-lengths of their own. bands of note: the bronx, suicide file, panic, the tonsils (!)."
