Synopsis

Album Description
"A sonic spectacular. The orchestra sounds full, natural, warm, and nicely spread out over the soundstage. There is none of the glare that still seems to affect many orchestral digital recordings; even the highest register of the violins sounds smooth and musical. Climaxes are never congested, and the fullest textures still retain clarity ... this is simply to enjoy." -- Fanfare Amazing high resolution sound on a deluxe hybrid SACD of favorites and rarities, including Saint-Saëns' Bacchanale, Strauss' Dance of the Seven Veils, and Rabaud's Dances from Marouf. This collection of wonderful performances from the Minnesota Orchestra has been a perennial favorite and best seller on CD, and can now be heard on SACD! This recording is one of legendary engineer "Prof." Keith Johnson's very best. Also includes HDCD encoding on CD layer for highest audiophile quality.

CD Reviews

Disappointing Rubinstein, sonics
Scott K. Colebank | Kansas City | 01/04/2010
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I purchased this disc to obtain an alternate interpretation of Rubenstein's ballet music from "The Demon" and was instantly disappointed by Eiji Oue's extremely s-l-o-w interpretation, as compared to a very fine reading (brisk but reasonable and warmer sonics) available from the Wuppertal Symphony under George Hanson, who play like world-beaters, by the way, on MDG. Although the SACD sound is decent, it does not contain the blockbuster sonics I had expected. That said, some tracks sound better than others. I have many Reference Recordings in my collection and almost all of them (recorded using the HDCD process) sound better than this one; try Oue's Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances, or either of the recent Kansas City Symphony CDs under Michael Stern, to name three. Even if you have a dedicated SACD player, as I do, I can't recommend this disc is you already own the previously issued version. I'm glad to see Reference Recordings finally starting to issue back catalogue on SACD, but this one left me cold."
