Synopsis

The title of the disc is a reference by pianist and jazz persona Evan Lurie to a period during which he composed a number of scores for low-budget films. Many of these are represented here, including Danny Leiner's Layin' Low, which has a reflective, smoky jazz score that rolls with a strong vibraphone jive, and New York University student Hannah Weyer's The Salesman and Other Adventures, which is backed by a clarinet and cello duet exuding both longing and pensiveness. The disc also contains "Cut Trees," a heartbreaking solo piano piece that was originally slated--but not used--for Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge. This collection is a shining example of how small and unusual orchestral arrangements can produce riveting soundtracks. --Michael Woodring
