Chopin Etudes Op.10 & Op.25 - review by David Dobson
03/04/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I got this CD when I was first getting interested in piano music, (and Chopin in particular). From the first time I heard the recordings by Idil Biret I classed the Chopin etudes among my favourite pieces of piano music. The Set of Opus 10 I think are a bit easier to understand, and when you get the music, I think that that you'll enjoy listening to Op.10 more than Op.25, but after you have been listening to the Etudes for a while, you'll begin to see what wonders lie within Op.25. Op.10 are still my favourite Etudes, but I also enjoy listening to the Op.25 etudes. Some of you may recognise some of them. Op.10 No.3 is a very famous piece that begins very serene and develops into a blazing fury that leads into a brilliant passage of music, before it returns to it's calm state. Op.25 No.9 is also a reasonably famous piece. It is a nice small piece in the key of G Flat Major that I have always enjoyed listening to. I could say something about them all, but it would take up too much space. Among my personal favourites are: Op.10 No.1,2,4,5,6,8,9 Op.25 No.3,5,6 (amazing), 9,10,11,12. The Pollini recordings are said to be the best, and I cannot really disagree, but this marvelous CD contains many wonders that I couldn't see in the Pollini recordings (brilliant though they are). I recomend this CD to absolutely anybody!"
A rare performer of Chopin Etudes

"Biret is one of the rare pianists who both record and perform the fiendishly difficult Chopin Etudes. There are many recordings of Chopin's complete sets of Etudes op.10 and 25 (some realised in recent years with considerable assistance from recording engineers). But, live performances of these as complete sets are rare. Pianists who play both op.10 and op.25 in one recital are even rarer. Biret is a pianist who does it all and her performances both on stage and record are exemplary."
