Synopsis

Amazon.com
This is an extremely varied collection, ranging from a series of klezmer melodies to the atonal weirdness of Varèse's Density 21.5 (which Eugenia Zukerman makes quite lyrical). Highlights along the way include familiar pieces by Debussy and Honegger, and an oddly amusing set by Bennett called Six Tunes for the Instruction of Singing-birds (something actually attempted during the Renaissance!) Katherine Hoover's heart-stoppingly beautiful Kokopeli is enough reason to buy the disc, as is her Reflections. Not all the performances are prime, but if the flute appeals to you, here is a unique collection of flute and nothing else. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

Lack of rhythm, lack of interest
07/29/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This was purchased as a reference tool and another idea for interpretation for Varese's Density 21.5. I was disappointed to hear her lack of regard towards rhythm and what is explicitly stated in the music. Varese's Density is to be strictly followed in tempo, articulation and especially rhythm. Zuckerman disregards some tempo changes and at times actually leaves out beats in a measure. Also, in Honegger's 'Danse de la Chevre' there are some questionable rhythms. On the other hand, the selections from other composers are played beautifully and very musically. The klemzer pieces and the pieces of birds are very good and very accurate. This cd will be used as background or mood music in the future. This would be an excellent cd if one was not interested in a well rounded performance."

"I love this CD so much! I bought about 20 copies! I teach flute and have my students buy this CD. I want them to get this lovely sound in their ear.Her playing is with style and she has a love for life that really comes through in this recording.
I can't praise this enough!!!"
