Synopsis

Album Description
Recordings of the legendary violinist Erica Morini (1904-1995) are truly treasures ? especially ones as rare as these. Once one of the great concert artists, looked up to by both Heifetz and Milstein for inspiration, she spent her last years in ill health and seclusion after suffering the theft of her Stradivarius and all her scores and memorabilia. These HMV, Polydor, Victor, and Armed Forces Radio Service recordings from before World War II are priceless records of her genius.

CD Reviews

A flawed yet vital recording.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Erica Morini was the violinist most likely to beat Jascha Heifetz in the virtuoso category in the middle 20th century. Doremi has provided us with a glimpse into this great artist's way with extremely important recordings. The Wieniawski Second Violin Concerto was a core work in Morini's repertory. Here she is captured at her youthful best accompanied by that most sympathetic of accompanists Eugene Ormandy with the great NBC Symphony from an AFRS recording. Although this was taken from a spotless recording, Doremi has botched their transfer by muffling the source recording horribly, making a mess of a historic performance. Shame on them for doing this! The other works are all smaller works with a Mozart Violin Sonata Louis Kentner being a model of Mozartean playing. The others include the only available recording Morini and her sister, a talented pianist in her own right) as well as other bon bons favorable in the acoustic and early electric years. Why just four stars? This has to do with bad sound image of the Wieniawski which needs to be brightened considerably. Maybe another label will have the guts to do this one properly?"
