CD Reviews

A German Hard Rock/Prog Classic
Chris Gerbig | Ontario, Canada | 09/03/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Epitaph were an early German progressive and heavy rock band comprised of two British and two German musicians. This debut album from 1971 is a classic. The heavy-riffed opener "Moving to the Country" is a great period rocker about smoking grass. "Visions" is a somber, progressive gem with great, atmospheric mellotron. "Hopelessly" is spurred by a driving rhythm section, a jazzy beat and some great jams from the dual lead guitarists. Fans of Uriah Heep, early Black Sabbath, old Jethro Tull, Steamhammer or Lucifer's Friend will appreciate what's on offer here. The bonus tracks include two raw, fuzzy, lost gems in the basement rockers "London Town Girl" and "I'm Trying". If you like your hard rock with a progressive twist, but not a lot of keyboards, this one's for you. You will then want to check out their other CDs. The vocalist is British, so there is no heavy accent or bad english to worry about. The CD features liner notes with an extensive band history."
