CD Reviews

COMPILATION FROM BEAT SNDTRKS
Mark Eakes | Lompoc, CA | 08/17/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Thsi CD contains cuts from IL GRANDE SILENZIO (3),THE FIVE-MAN ARMY (2), HOLOCAUST 2000 (THE CHOSEN) (2), SEX IN THE CONFESSIONAL (3), IL MOSTRO (2), UN BELLISSIMO NOVEMBRE (2), IL PREFETTO DI FERRIO, and IL SORRISO DEL GRANDE TENTATORE. It is a wide ranging mix and shows off Morricone's range. The two westerns (SILENZIO and 5-MAN ARMY) could not be fartehr apart in tone and mood. The former is a dark, bloody, violent western rarely seen anywhere, and the latter pops up on TV every so often, and the theme makes you want to saddle up and gallop across the plains. It is also an example of Morricone's sly sense of humor. SEX IN THE CONFESIONAL's pieces are of a varying nature from kind of jazzy, trembling violins, piano and electronic effects to the use of a woman laughing mixed with bongos, flute and slashing strings all to a strange effect. HOLOCAUST ranges from a party type music to a beautiful piano driven, oboe-dominated melody that is almost heroic in nature, all for a movie that is about the Anti-Christ starring Kirk Douglas. ...NOVEMBRE... is a lovely, haunting melody that has the signature Morricone whistling accompanied by strings playing the harmony. Ending the CD is a strange cue from IL GRANDE SORRISO DEL GRANDE TENTATORE (THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN). This starts out as a church hymn, but then turns in rock guitar driven anthem which could very well exemplify evil in a convent."

"Ragored Records presents another "film-score-buffs" dream come true "Morricone 2000", featuring sixteen cues of the most popular composer from Italy...wonderful concept as Maestro Ennio Morricone completely mesmerizes the listening audience ~ recently the music world lost three legendary composers Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith and David Raksin all in a short period of time...so why not bring to the forefront Ennio Morricone with some of his greatest and memorable scores and film themes.

Celebrate the career of indelible musical impressions courtesy of the most renowned film score composer of our time Ennio Morricone each cue released from eight film categories by "HOLOCAUST 2000", "IL GRANDE SILENZIO", "IL PREFETTO DI FERRO", "IL SORRISO DEL GRANDE TENTATORE", "MOSTRO", "SESSO IN CONFESSIONALE", "UN ESERCITO DI 5 UOMINI", "UN BELLISSIMO NOVEMBRE", Maestro Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores, listen as he taps into each track with brilliant performances that will leave you spellbound.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry...all in all Dagored Records has done magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which has been long over-due...his work is in constant demand, scoring a half dozen films as year...well worth a five star rating review!

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring...enriched and fullfilling for all the "film-score-buffs", but still craving more of the same, just the way we like 'em!
