DEFINITIVE, DAZZLING MORRICONE!
VINCENT P TARSITANO | PORT ORANGE, FL USA | 02/01/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was my first complete score by Morricone, purchased on vinyl as released by United Artists as DUCK, YOU SUCKER. The film later re-christened as A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE. I was hooked by the beauty and originality of the music, and the feel and inventiveness of the composer. I now own over 100 scores or compilations of his.

I say definitive, because if I had to describe the essence of Maestro Morricone, I would have to do no more than to point one to this score. It has all of his wonderful trademarks: irresistibly melodic, romantic adagio; wordless female vocals by the incomparable, sweet and strong at-the-same-time Edda Dell'Orso; the famous building "bed of strings" thing; occasionally angular and electronic instrumentation; human whistling by the great Alessandro Alessandroni; and truly tight and rhythmic action underscoring. Incredible!

The main theme is one of the composer's most memorable, and features both male and female vocal lines, with a repeated "shone!-shone!" phrase (meaning absolutely nothing). Highly original and beautiful. The "Love Theme" is a standard, though wonderful, romantic adagio. "Mesa Verde," is a stunning, almost hypnotic theme, featuring just a touch of electronic instrumentation and a wonderful horn phrase. This set also includes a longer version/variation called "Messico e Irlanda," that is a treat. "March of The Beggars" really shows off the composer's inventiveness and sense of humor, has a few very dramatic sections, and incorporates a phrase from Mozart's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. The couple of action underscoring pieces are among the composer's best, truly exciting and enjoyable.

Maestro Morricone has composed dozens of scores that rival this one, but there is probably none that says MORRICONE like this one.

DEFINITIVE, ESSENTIAL, beautiful, fun, exciting and ORIGINAL.
