Dark powers
Corneille | Canada | 03/09/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Built in two parts, the first being drenched into dark nature and space, bleak and eerie paths that lead to the fifth song where the gate opens leading to the second part of the opus which is becoming of bombastic arrogance riding on symphonic skeleton to culminate with and ode to dark powers, reaching simultaneously the highest of the peeks."

"Emperor began in early 1991 as a trio. Featuring Samoth on drums/vocals, Isahn as guitarist and Mortiis as bassist, the band quickly began writing and soon recorded their first demo, Wrath of the Tyrant. After this demo had caught Candlelight Record's attention, they made some slight line-up changes. Samoth became second guitarist and Bard Faust filled in as permanent drummer. At this time the band had already moved to the studio to record half of their Emperor/Enslaved CD which would appear the following year. Eventually, Mortiis would leave the band only to be replaced by Tchort. The press regarding the band was excellent, and in the summer of '93 the band had recorded their first full-length album, In the Nightside Eclipse. After it's release in '94 Emperor had already made a mark as one of the most influential Black Metal bands ever. Nightside is also a landmark album as it was an introduction to the "sophisticated black metal art" of what has become one of my all time fav's. Cosmic Keys... and I am the black wizards which are standouts here, but at the end of Inno a satana, you will be sorry the albums over. This is truly emperor's best work. However, if you are not familiar with black metal or emperor and want to buy this album; I suggest you first try "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk", because "In the nightside eclipse" might be a little heavier than emperor's next 3 albums."
