Synopsis

Amazon.com
Compared to her sometime singing partner Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris is not an especially distinctive singer or songwriter. She lacks the raw talent to match the towering high points of Parton's career, but at the same time Harris has managed to avoid the embarrassing lapses that have plagued Parton. Harris has exhibited a deep understanding of what makes the best country music endure and a stubborn refusal to accept anything less. You can comb through her 20 albums and never find an embarrassingly corny novelty number, a shamelessly maudlin weeper, or a less-than-flawless vocal. This box set gathers all her commercial hits, staples of her live shows, prime examples of her every phase, her best collaborations with other artists, and five previously unreleased tracks. --Geoffrey Himes

"This lady brings out the soul in everything she touches. No disrepect to Dolly Parton but there's just no comparison - to my mind it's only the stuff very close to Dolly's heart and experience (e.g. coat of many colours etc) where she manages anything like this brooding angel."

"Comparing Emmylou to Dolly is like comparing apples and oranges, and being a professor of writing, I feel I know a thing or two about making comparisons. Emmylou is a true artist and wonderful lyricist. That is, she not only knows exactly how to move the listener through unique, unbelievable and articulate vocalization (which is less constructed, more fluid and more organic than Dolly's twang ever could be), but she knows how to write a damn good song. Emmylou is one of the best female vocalists of our time. If one knows how to listen, and listening is an art, one will hear. Now let's all take a moment to listen and let this woman shine out."

"I remember buying an album back in the mid-1970's - Emmylou Harris' "Blue Kentucky Girl" - on a trip to Colorado, and eagerly waiting to get back home to play it. I was enthralled with her soulfully smooth voice back when I was a kid.

This collection features several selections from that album, but is an excellent overview of some of her finest work, including the Dolly Parton-Linda Ronstadt "Trio" days. "Portraits" contains some of my very favorite Emmylou tracks: "Roses In The Snow", "Millworker", "Two More Bottles Of Wine", "Luxury Liner", "Save The Last Dance For Me".

Some of her best duet work is here, too, including her early work with Gram Parsons."
