CD Reviews

A stunning Lass
David T. Steere, Jr. | Annapolis, MD United States | 06/25/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Joining the ranks of the most beautiful traditional/celtic singers (Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Karan Casey, Niamh Parsons, and others), Emily is a wonder. Extremely moving performances in her very lovely Scottish voice of "Fair Helen of Kirkconnel," "Green Grass Grows Bonny" (aka "I Wonder What is Keeping My True Love This Night"), "Time Wears Awa," "Molly Lovely Molly" and an amazing version of "The Cruel Mother." Emily plays a wicked accordion and soulful piano and surrounds herself with first rate musicians. She also writes new songs as well as she performs old ones--a talent like Kate Rusby's--which is particularly on display on her newer cd, A DIFFERENT LIFE. Don't miss either."
A remarkably beautiful voice

"A resurgence of traditional Scottish folk music has brought forth a number of new talents that are worthy of pause. Such is the case with Emily Smith. Emily, an accomplish pianist and accordian player, has a voice that is pure and graceful. So pure and graceful, in fact, that she top took honors as the 2002 "BBC Radio Scotland's Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year". With Sean O'Donnell (guitar), Jamie McClennan (fiddle), and Ross Ainslie (pipes), the Emily Smith Band's debut "Day Like Today" has a clean tight sound and is a pleasant surprise that should be a part of any musical library."
