CD Reviews

Vintage mid-career Elvis.
Robert S. Clay Jr. | St. Louis, MO., USA | 03/17/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is vintage Elvis from the early '60s, and it is recommended for anyone seriously collecting his music. There is less of the primitive raw youth of the pre-army music, and more of the smooth polish of an experienced performer. This is evident in the entertaining blend of finger snapping rock-'n-roll songs and the more subdued atmosphere of the ballads. This album includes "It's Now or Never," a peculiar footnote in Elvis' career. Elvis wanted to try a Dean Martin style Neapolitan love song, and "It's Now or Never" is the result. This song can either be enjoyed or ignored, depending on one's personal taste. I recommend instead the great sing-along tune "I Gotta' Know," the hard hitting rhythm of "I Feel So Bad," and the triumvirate of "His Latest Flame," "Little Sister," and "Good Luck Charm." The album also includes the slow-dance classic "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" This CD edition of the original 33 1/3 record album has several bonus tracks including "Follow that Dream" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." The collection is a good cross-sample of Elvis at mid-career before he was trapped in the quagmire of the inferior mid-'60s movie soundtracks. Definitely recommended for Elvis connoisseurs."
Amazingly Comprehensie Collection Of Elvis's Post-Army Hits

"Released in 1963, the third volume in the "Gold Records" series probably is the best. Featuring a few smash hits and a lot of songs that haven't gotten their due yet. Let's take a quick walk through the cd.Well, for starters, you got your basic smash hits. The sweeping "It's Now Or Never", the bouncy "Stuck On You", the evergreen "Can't Help Falling In Love", the bitter heartbreaking "Are You Lonesome Tonight", the breathtaking "Surrender", the poppy "Goodluck CharM", the guitar charged blues "Little Sister" and the charming "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" are all here in their top 10 glory. But just as good are the tracks that don't get enough recognition. Songs like "I Gotta Know", the optimistic "Follow That Dream", "Wooden Heart" (a # 1 smash for Joe Dowell), "King Of The Whole Wide World" and "Feel So Bad" are big, booming uptemp numbers, while "Anything That's Part Of You", "Wild Country" and "She's Not You" are among the prettiest songs in the Elvis catalogue. Not to be overlooked is "The Girl Of My Best Friend", which has an irrestible melody line. This volume is essential to all Elvis fans. Get it today and make the king proud."
Volume 3 is a great example of Elvis' early post-Army career

"My aunt has the original 1963 album. It's fantastic. This 1997 reissue of "Elvis' Golden Records Volume 3" is even more fantastic with the extra tracks. They do make the ablum longer. This time, like most times, the extra tracks are at the end where the old album left off. The original starting track, "It's Now Or Never", is thrilling, timeless, and romantic as ever. "Little Sister" is downright nasty and a great rockin' song! I love it, baby! Elvis shows in this compilation he still had that great singing talent after his return from the Army!"
