Ella at Her Best

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Considering how extensive Ella Fitzgerald's recording catalog is, it is very difficult to compare this album to her other work. Nevertheless, from the small group of recordings I've listened to, I sincerely regard this one as Ella at her best. This record finds The First Lady of Song at her most expressive, vulnerable, and comfortable. She glides effortlessly through the diverse styles with her trademark phrasing, tone and scatting, enrapturing listeners with her undeniable talent. From "Take the A Train," a fun vocal record about the best way to Harlem, to "Mood Ingigo" a song so smooth one can taste it, Ella takes supreme command. She was a singer completely in control of her gift, and who used it to its most beautiful potential.

Not to go unnoticed, Duke Ellington's band supports Fitzgerald perfectly. Using unconventional jazz instruments like the violin and guitar, they create a unique sound perfect for a unique voice. I definitely recommend this fantastic album! It's so good it hurts."
