A disappointment for vocal jazz fans.

"This is not what one would expect from Ella in a Christmas album. To her credit, she approached the music very reverently; all the songs are sacred, and there is no Rudolph or Santa. Ralph Carmichael's choir is excellent. Unfortunately, there is not much originality with the treatment of the music. It's basically Ella singing lead with choral accompaniment, and none of the jubilant, bouncy rhythm one might expect.

With all due respect to the master of scat, Ella does not seem to be at the top of her game technically on this one either. Ella's life was filled with turmoil and personal low-points. I have to wonder if this project was recorded during one of those low points.

If you're looking for a better Ella Christmas album, go with Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas [Remastered]."
