CD Reviews

A good single-disc overview of Elis' best work.

"This is a compilation album. If you're a new fan, this is a great place to start. This disc has a very nice selection of some of her best work. The sound is good, and the sequencing of tunes is very agreeable.

If you recently got turned on to Elis and you live in the U.S., maybe you've already noticed how IMPOSSIBLE it is to find her CD's. Judging from this alone, it's hard to imagine how she can be the most legendary singer in Brazilian history--but she is! In fact, one of the nicest things about this anthology is that you can probably find a decent copy for less than a truckload of arms and legs. Even though it's out of print there were affordable used copies here on Amazon last time I looked.

One thing you must understand: this collection BARELY SCRATCHES THE SURFACE of Elis Regina's genius. I'd advise you to track down as many of her original albums as you can--especially "Como E Porque." And her duet albums with Tom Jobim and Toots Theilemans are both essential Bossa Nova masterpieces (and far easier to find than her strictly "solo" material).

Even though I have most of her catalog, I still like to hear this disc now and then because I'm fond of the song selection.

If you need help connecting with her other recordings, contact me through my profile. I'll help if I possibly can."
Quite agreed

"This is a great Elis starter. But remember, she had further emotional and artistic latitude to offer over the years. Be therefore prepared for further VERY pleaseant surprises. The entire Brazil still loves her (?oh why did you go away, Elis?), and now all us Latinos also love her daughter who is a great singer on her own, Maria Rita.

- La pimentinha lives in our minds forever!"
