Synopsis

Album Description
On the heels of the recent Droppin' Science compilation, and to the delight of crate-diggers everywhere, come these treasures from deep in the Blue Note vaults. The artists featured here created soulful, and funkified sounds that decades later became the source of grooves, vamps, and beats for today's most heralded DJs and hip-hop producers, from Jay-Z to Beastie Boys to The Roots...The Soul Symphony, The Three Sounds' quaint, swinging lyricism garnered the soul-jazz trio widespread appeal, making them one of Blue Note's best sellers in the 1950s and 1960s. This is the last official Three Sounds album and it is quiet literally a soul symphony; a compassionate criticism of late 1960s urban life set against cushy strings and head-bobbin' jams.

CD Reviews

Jazz would never be the same after album!!!!

"This was the first jazz album I ever purchased, in 1970. After hearing it being played next door from my college neighbors room, I ran over to ask him who that was. It was to be the first of many such trips next door, as my neighbor had a superb collection of jazz that he educated me on. I then went to see Gene Harris and the 3 Sounds that very same year, at Watt's Club Mozambique in Detroit, but his line-up had changed from the Symphony album. It was his Killer Joe tour and I wasn't disappointed. He even stopped by our table to greet us, as he made the rounds around the club. I think I've played this album more than any of my other albums, including my Miles Davis or John Coltrane albums. Symphony?, Jazz? , what's going on here? The level of sophistication is extraordinary, and cannot be recommended highly enough. Gene Harris was always the strongest keyboard player, but his sensitivity on the softer passages on this album is incredible. I love this album!!!"

"Legendary S.F. DJ Bobby Dale turned me on to this album in the early 70's

when I was an intern for him. My vinyl copy is cherished and I burned 5-CDs just in case something happened to the other 4!!

This has always been close-to, if not my favorite jazz album of all time.

All hail Monk Higgins.

"Too bad I didn't know about this disc years ago. If you can listen to this and not want to move your feet, you better check for a pulse. The sound quality is excellent as well."
