CD Reviews

Susan Boyle's Idol
Morgan Harper Johnson | Dallas TX, USA | 10/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album does what it promises, i.e., showcasing Elaine Paige's immense repertoire, developed over a lengthy career in London. Perhaps unknown to many on this side of the Atlantic until Scotland's Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent introduced her own amazing voice by saying she aspired to a career like Elaine's, this album is a great way to get acquainted with Elaine's talent. I've also ordered Susan Boyle's debut album I Dreamed A Dream and salute Nana Mouskouri The Romance of Nana Mouskouri as another world diva whose amazing voice and multi-lingual song stylings deserve a fan base here in the U.S. Sweet Memories is a wonderful addition to any music library."
Elaine Paige/First lady of British Musical Theater

"I was previously unaware of this performer. While watching a story about Susan Boyle on TV, she was asked what her dream was...and she replied it was to sing a duet with Elaine Paige. The duet was stunning and so I immediatley ordered 2 CD's by her; this being one of them. The passion, clarity, and emotion with which she delivers her nuanced perfomances is overshadowed only by her intense undestanding of the lyrics. Included are several tracks from the musical Piaf and her french is impeccable---clearly showing that she knows what she is singing about. The CD includes some older songs like Les Trois Cloches and Windmills of Your Mind...as well as relatively more current fare like Perfect Year from Sunset Boulevard and a particularly haunting rendition of Unchained Melody. Each and every track is a gem and I wholeheartedly recommend this CD to all fans of musical theater-as well as to those who just know how to appreciate a singer with a marvelous voice. She is one of those rare performers---a la Liza, Strreisand and Betty Buckley, who can really interpret a song and make it their own. This is a must-have CD from a brand new fan!"
