Silence Is Sexy Review
Pithy Commentz | CT | 01/30/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is the most laid-back Einsturzende Neubauten album I've ever heard. Every single song on this album is fire, the lyrics are perfect, and the music is crazy! The only problem is that I got this on vinyl and it has another track "Missed Calls" as opposed to "Total Eclipse of the Sun.""
Silence really is sexy

"If you like the album Ende Neu then you will love this album. In Silence is Sexy they focus on music and make use of industrial noise as yet another musical instrument. In fact, the liner notes will list items used with other instruments on each track. Also, be sure to read the lyrics as translations are provided for those who do not know German. The words are half the joy."
The rest is silence

"'Silence is Sexy', along with 'Perpetuum Mobile', represents Einstürzende Neubatuen's most compelling work, and although not as consistent like 'Perpetuum' (being more a collection of thematically unrelated songs) 'Silence' is nevertheless a masterpiece in terms of composition and songwriting. Some fans of E.N.'s early and noisier material won't like it due to its quietly understated tones, but it does in fact have its moments of musical intensity. There are also many subtle and crazy things going on under the surface if you listen closely, and all of these contribute to the whole.

From the enchanting opener 'Sabrina' onwards, we are treated to some of E.N.'s most riveting material. The first half of the album contains lighter, more whimsical material, like 'In Circles', which presents hidden beauty in the dance of unseen molecules, while 'Newton's Gravitätlichkeit' gently satirises the pretensions of science.

The album generally gets heavier as it goes along, with the slower, darker pieces occurring towards the end, starting with the amazing 'Die Befindlichkeit des Landes', where Blixa mentally soars over the "künftige Ruinen" (future ruins) which constitute our ugly modern cities. Moving through epics like 'Sonnenbarke' and 'Redukt' we come to 'Dingsaller' with its fantastic lyrics: "Over lovers there is no law...because of lovers there is possibility." The album is rounded out by the beautiful 'Total Eclipse of the Sun'.

Ignore the second disc which only features the supremely boring 'Pelikanol'. Five stars for the main disc, which represents E.N. at their finest and most creative."
