The Best Kept Secret
LZF0 | New York | 04/25/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Alec Wilder is one of America's most unknown compser-lyricists. He is also one of the best. Even people in the know are only aware of "While We're Young", "I'll Be Around", and "It's So Peaceful in the Country". For years, I thought he only wrote ballads. This album, along with the sets by Marlene Ver Planck, Vic Juris, Marion McPartland, and Jackie and Roy Kral have opened my ears to the beauty and complex magic of Wilder's work. Loonis McGlohon is close to the tastiest accompanist in the business today and he keeps Ms. Farrell swinging. Anyone intersted in the finest American music needs to check out this set."
A difficult listen...

"What she recorded in the 60s is fantastic, and she's undoubtedly the one opera singer who crossed over into pop successfully, but her pitch problems are abundant here, and it makes this, and in fact, the entire Reference Recordings issues a difficult listen."
