Edward Collins was born in 1889 and his music tends to be European in its influence, since that's where he went to study when he was a young man. His mature music is very much middle-of-the-road American Romantic, but there are moments when he seems to prefer the mid-nineteenth century, especially in Concertpiece in A Minor for Piano and Orchestra. It's a 1931 composition that hints of Schumann and Brahms. Overall, Collins's music seems much less American than it does European; however Collins does avoid the major trends toward serialism and atonality. A minor voice worth investigating. --Paul Cook
